Volvo V40 (2012-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Interesting alternative to Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series | Cramped interior and poor luggage capacity |
| Fuel-efficient diesel models | Not great to drive |
| Impressive safety equipment | No hybrid or electric option |
Quick Summary
The Volvo V40 (2012-2019) is an upmarket five-door hatchback designed to compete with the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, and Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Launched in 2012 with a mid-life facelift in 2016, it offers a plush interior and smart styling across multiple trim levels, from basic ES to sporty R-Design and rugged Cross-Country variants. The V40 prioritises safety and comfort, featuring impressive safety equipment and a reassuring, steady driving experience ideal for long journeys. However, rear seat space and the 335-litre boot are average, and the narrow rear windows create a claustrophobic atmosphere.
The V40 offers an excellent engine range with fuel-efficient diesel options achieving 55-65mpg, whilst smaller petrol engines deliver around 45mpg. The T5 variants provide performance but consume fuel heavily. Running costs lean towards premium levels, with Volvo service prices reflecting its upmarket positioning. All engines feature timing belts requiring replacement every six years or 87,500 miles. Production ended in 2019 with no direct replacement, as Volvo shifted focus to larger vehicles. It's an interesting alternative to mainstream rivals, though not as engaging to drive as the Volkswagen Golf or BMW 1 Series.
Best for: Safety-conscious buyers seeking an upmarket alternative to premium badges, those prioritising comfort and equipment, and drivers wanting fuel-efficient diesel engines.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing spacious rear seating or large boot capacity, those seeking engaging driving dynamics, or those wanting hybrid or electric options.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo V40 | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 36.1% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW 1 Series | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 39.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi A3 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.4% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen Golf Mk7 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 34.3% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the V40 if: Safety is your absolute priority, you seek an upmarket alternative to premium badges, or you want fuel-efficient diesel engines with impressive equipment.
Consider alternatives if: You need spacious rear seating or large boot capacity, prioritise engaging driving dynamics, or require hybrid or electric options.
Competitive Position: The Volvo V40 (2012-2019) occupies an interesting niche as an upmarket alternative to mainstream rivals, offering impressive safety equipment and a plush interior. Whilst it excels in comfort and equipment, it falls short against the Volkswagen Golf for all-round talent and the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 for driving engagement. Its average rear space and uninspiring handling limit its appeal compared to more dynamic competitors. However, for safety-conscious buyers seeking a distinctive, well-equipped alternative with efficient diesel options, the V40 remains a compelling choice, particularly at its current market value.

4.5 Overall rating
(13 reviews)Customers say
The Volvo V40, particularly the 2019 model, is appreciated by owners for its stylish design and extensive features, making it a visually appealing option. However, there are concerns about reliability, specifically with clutches, which can be expensive to fix. While many find the value to be good, its discontinuation raises some doubts. Overall, drivers enjoy how it looks and the driving experience, but some aspects of usability, like the navigation system and controls, received criticism.

Smart and beautifully fitted out inside. Built like the proverbial tank with loads of luxury extras.
It's a lovely car to drive, 2L engine makes it quite powerful for motorway driving. Very comfortable seats and half leather trim. Kids are very happy to have their own cup holders I the back.
Fun and suprisingly nimble despite its age and size, very comfortable and despite age still fairly well equipped.
