| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|

| A wide choice of efficient petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid engines | Not as able off road as a Land Rover |
| Spacious and comfortable cabin | No seven-seat option |
Quick Summary
The BMW X3 (2018-2024), known as the G01, is a compact premium SUV that blends impressive handling with strong performance, practicality and modern technology. This third-generation model was launched in 2017 and features a slightly extended wheelbase for improved spaciousness, fresh styling and comprehensive standard equipment including triple-zone climate control. A range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines are available, alongside the high-performance X3 M Competition variant, ensuring there's something to suit most buyers.
The X3 excels on the road with engaging handling that sets it apart from rivals like the Audi Q5 and Land Rover Discovery Sport. Even entry-level engines are flexible and powerful, whilst the cabin is spacious, comfortable and well-designed with a 550-litre boot. Running costs vary by model, with the xDrive20i and xDrive20d achieving up to 36.7mpg and 47.9mpg respectively, whilst the plug-in hybrid xDrive30e offers exceptional efficiency at 148.7mpg claimed. Fixed-price servicing plans are available to help manage maintenance costs, with options from £25 monthly.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium SUV with engaging driving dynamics, those wanting a wide choice of efficient engines, and drivers prioritising a spacious, comfortable interior with modern technology.
Not ideal for: Those requiring off-road capability, buyers needing a seven-seat option, or those seeking a more comfortable ride in sportier variants.

The Verdict
You should buy the X3 if: You're seeking a premium SUV with engaging driving dynamics, want a wide choice of efficient engines, or prioritise a spacious, comfortable interior with modern technology.
Consider alternatives if: You require off-road capability, need a seven-seat option, or prefer a more comfortable ride in sportier variants.
Competitive Position: The BMW X3 (2018-2024) is a standout in the premium compact SUV segment, offering superior driving dynamics and an impressive range of efficient powertrains. Whilst the Volvo XC60 may offer greater comfort and the Land Rover Discovery Sport better off-road credentials, the X3's overall package of engaging handling, spacious interior, modern technology and engine choice makes it a compelling choice. The Audi Q5 and Porsche Macan are worthy alternatives, but few rivals match the X3's combination of driver engagement and practicality. For those prioritising an engaging drive without compromising on comfort and technology, the X3 easily justifies its place on your shopping list.

What people say
X drive is a big advantage for me, solid BMW engineering too - and of course a decent size
It is a good looking car but the insurance bracket is too high.
This is my 3rd BMW X3. Its a wonderful car for reliability, comfort and safety. Plus it really looks good too. Very comfortable and spacious interior, huge boot space. Highly recommended.
Excellent family car that handles long distance exceptionally well
This particular car was very well appointed. I like the Intelligent cruise, the upgraded Infotainment and the factory towbar. The 35D engine is astonishing. Its super smooth and very responsive whilst being docile around town. When you need the power its Instant and really punches the car forward very impressively. Good fuel economy is possible with light use of the throttle. The seating position is perfect and very comfortable. I was apprehensive regarding the 20 inch wheels but the ride is firm but reasonably smooth. Road holding is positive and theres little body roll. Theres great visibility all round and overall its a very nice place to be once youre settled in to the m-sport seats. Its a great every day car with enough grunt to please all enthusiastic drivers whilst having huge load space for shopping trips and wild adventures. All round perfect SUV or as BMW say Sports action vehicle...
